The first mention of Jews living in Vilnius was in 1567. Before World War II, a large and active Jewish community lived in Vilnius, which made up about a third of the entire population of the Lithuanian capital. Vilnius was an important center of Jewish culture and intelligentsia, called the Jerusalem of the North.

The closed shutters visible in the work seem to symbolize the extinct community. The arrow pointing to the sky is associated with the fact that most of the members of the Vilnius Jewish community died.
